The Essay Competition

The Express Yourself in the Garden High School Essay Competition is a signature community engagement initiative — connecting the event directly with Omaha's high schools and the next generation of storytellers.

The Community

High schools and youth-serving organizations across Omaha receive the competition application, eligibility requirements, and submission guidelines. Students submit an original written essay.

The North Center

Finalists are invited to the Learning Community of Douglas & Sarpy County — North Center for a live final round, where the strongest voices are selected to advance.

The Main Stage

The winner adapts their piece for a live spoken-word performance at Express Yourself in the Garden — earning a cash award and on-stage recognition before the full audience.

From the community to the North Center to the Main Stage, this initiative gives partners sustained visibility through branding, marketing, publications, and on-site recognition.
